Mars Rover Detects Spike In Methane On Mars

Published on 07/18/19 / In News & Politics

According to a report by Gizmodo, NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered 'startlingly high amounts of methane in the Martian air' in what could potentially be a sign of life on the Red Planet. On Saturday, the New York Times reported that the detection of methane would be a major discovery as it breaks down within a few centuries, meaning that it would have had to have been generated quite recently in historical terms. Gizmodo reports that high levels of methane could potentially be generated underground by microbes called methanogens that survive without oxygen and produce the gas as a metabolic byproduct.
