Space Could Be Littered With Earth-Sized 'Diamond' Stars

Astronomers have identified a distant white dwarf star so dim and cool that its carbon has actually crystallized, forming what is essentially a giant diamond the size of Earth. Professor David Kaplan and colleagues found the star, which hangs out in orbit with a pulsar at the final stages of its life, using data from a combination of observatories around the world. Bart Dunlap, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and one of the team members, said "If there's a white dwarf there, and there almost certainly is, it must be extremely cold."
