According to a new study, scientists at Stanford University were able to stimulate growth to optic nerves in blind mice, and reconnect the eye to the brain, partially restoring the animal's vision. By stimulating the optic nerves, researchers were able to re-establish links and coax the optic nerve cables, causing them to regrow, and allowing the afflicted mice to regain their sight. The study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, runs contrary to accepted scientific knowledge, which says that damaged axons in the brain or spinal cord do not regenerate, unlike axons in other parts of the body.
